A man has been urged to “come clean as soon as possible” after he lied to his girlfriend about the true meaning of his tattoo.
He says his partner has always been really into tattoos and has always encouraged him to get one, but he wanted to wait for something that was “truly meaningful” to him.
As a huge American football fan, he has always admired the player Tom Brady and when the quarterback picked up his seventh Super Bowl ring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last weekend, he decided he had found a cause worthy of getting inked.
The man had the number 12 tattooed on his arm in honour of the number Brady has worn his entire career, and coloured it blue as a nod to the team where he spent 20 years, the New England Patriots.
When he got home from the studio, he immediately went to show his girlfriend the tattoo, explaining that he had “finally found something meaningful enough to me”.
But it didn’t quite go to plan as he explained: “I unwrapped it and when she saw the big blue 12 on my arm she began to cry about how getting a tattoo of the year we started dating is so beautiful and romantic.”
And things got worse when he then lied to her when he had an opportunity to correct the assumption. He said: “The entire time getting the tattoo it didn’t even occur to me that 2012 was the year we started dating or that she would even make that connection.
“She was critical of the font but was moved by the sentiment, and when she asked me what the colour blue symbolised I told her it was her blue eyes even though it was Patriots colours.”
He says he now feels like he will have to keep the true meaning a secret for the rest of his life, but he had already told his brothers and friends about the tattoo before he got it done.
The man added: “I’m worried because the implication is that Tom Brady is more important to me than she is, which isn’t true. He’s just been a part of my life longer.
“Either way I feel like she’s going to be upset. Do I tell her the truth? Keep it a secret? I feel like having to lie about the tattoo to people every time I’m asked about it for the rest of my life would tear me apart.”
Many people on Reddit advised him to tell her the truth before it gets any worse, as one commented: “Aw dude, you f***ed up. You lied to her? That sucks, man. You have to be aware of the fact that you dug yourself into this hole. Tell the truth, deal with the consequences.”
A second said: “I have no advice but I laughed very hard at the predicament you have now gotten yourself into.”
And another told him to double down, suggesting: “You tell your friends and family that you were joking before and you got the tattoo for your girlfriend. Then you take it to your grave. Brady’s number?? What a weird coincidence.”
